*What is the “Heat Mass Start” race format?
-
All competitors are divided into several groups—known as heats—with approximately 20 to 25 skiers each.
-
Depending on the number of skiers, there are three to four heats.
-
Each heat completes a 5-km lap using any skiing technique.
-
Once one group crosses the finish line, the next one starts.
-
Each skier races only once. There are no qualifiers and no advancement to a final.
-
The deciding factor is not primarily the placement in one’s own heat, but the time over five kilometers.
-
Afterward, the times from all heats are compared. The fastest time of the entire day wins the stage.
